How it all started: In November 2003 a little girl named McKinley from Chapmanville, WV was diagnosed with cancer at the innocent age of 11 months. I will never forget my feeling of helplessness as I was driving home from Charleston and I heard my best friend say “McKinley has cancer”. I have always heard about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and that the families are never turned away for their inability to pay, but I never realized how much hearing those three words would impact my life forever. During McKinley’s initial diagnoses I had the opportunity to visit St. Jude for a week, not knowing exactly what to expect, I was very nervous walking through those “hospital” doors for the first time. Nothing could have prepared me for the BLESSING I was about to receive. The “hospital” was more like a HOME filled with so much HOPE, LOVE, and HAPPINESS. I was so in awe by my uplifting experience, when I walked out of the doors of St. Jude I thought, “I have to do something more” and that is why you are reading about these events today! Five years ago I started a “Weekend Of Hope” which is a group of events held locally where 100% of the profits go directly to St. Jude. The events were inspired by McKinley’s journey and other West Virginia children who have fought this horrible disease. In addition to the annual AEP-Amos Plant’s Exclusive Golf Tournament “Rivals for a Cure” where former WVU and Marshall athletes join us on the golf course to benefit the cause, we will be having a “Miracle Motorcycle Ride” and “Princess Tea Party”. The Blue Knights Motorcycle Club and Party Creations of Kanawha City have jumped on board, without any hesitation to help. They are volunteering their time to not only host events but also to help gather donations. I am so thankful to have them on board and am excited to see what this year unfolds. We would like to thank you in advance for your time and support. Please make note that all donations received will be posted on this event website hosted by Netranom Communications of Hurricane, WV and designed by eve, inc. of Huntington, WV. We look forward to your participation in these events. Sincerely, Lissie McGuire, Coordinator 304.539.0984 – mobile Email: info@rivalsforacure.com
